Here’s a frustrating place to be: your site gets visitors (the analytics prove it) but the phone doesn’t ring and the enquiry form stays quiet. It feels like the traffic is fake or the whole thing is broken. Usually it’s neither. A site that gets visitors but no leads has a conversion leak, and conversion leaks are almost always a short list of specific, fixable things. It’s not a mystery, and not a reason to burn your marketing budget getting more of the traffic that’s already not converting.
Here’s the real list, roughly in order of how often it’s the culprit, so you can find which one is yours.
1. The next step isn’t obvious
The most common leak by far. A visitor lands, reads a bit, feels vaguely interested, and then has to work out what to do. Where’s the button? What happens if I click it? Do I have to fill in a huge form?
Every page needs one obvious next step, repeated, that a distracted person on a phone can’t miss. Not three competing links and a contact form buried in the footer. If someone has to hunt for how to enquire, most won’t.
Check: open your site on your phone. Can you start an enquiry in one tap, from anywhere on the page, without scrolling to find it? If not, that’s leak number one.
2. It’s too slow, so they leave before they convert
Speed isn’t just a ranking factor. It’s a conversion factor. A site that takes five seconds on a phone has already lost a chunk of visitors before they see anything, and frustrated the rest. They don’t tell you they left; they just do.
Check: run your homepage through Google’s PageSpeed Insights on mobile. Under 50 and you’re leaking visitors to slowness. (Template platforms often sit here and can’t easily be fixed.)
3. It doesn’t build enough trust to act
Traffic that doesn’t trust you won’t enquire. If a visitor can’t quickly see real reviews, real work or results, who you actually are, and why you’re credible, they’ll “think about it”, which means leave. This is especially fatal for higher-value or trust-based purchases: trades, clinics, professional services.
Check: within the first screen or two, can a stranger find a reason to believe you’re legit and good? Reviews, real photos, credentials, results?
4. The message is about you, not them
A lot of sites lead with “we are a family-owned business established in 2009 committed to excellence.” The visitor’s actual question is “can you solve my problem?” If the site talks about the business instead of the visitor’s problem and outcome, it doesn’t connect, and interest quietly drains.
Check: does your headline name the visitor’s problem or desired outcome, or does it name you?
5. There’s no reason to act now
Even interested visitors procrastinate. If there’s no easy, low-friction, immediate action (book online now, get an instant estimate, message and get a fast reply) many will intend to “come back later” and never do. Friction and delay are where warm visitors go cold.
Check: is the easiest action on your site “fill in a form and wait for a callback”? That’s a leak. The fastest-converting sites let people book or get an answer now.
6. You’re invisible to the AI layer (a newer one)
Increasingly, the highest-intent buyers aren’t landing on your homepage first. They’re asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI “who’s the best [what you do] near me,” and acting on the answer. If your site isn’t machine-readable, you’re absent from that answer entirely, and the “visitors but no leads” problem is compounded by a whole channel of leads you never see. We built a free check for exactly this, and explained how the scoring works.
How to find your leak
Work the list top to bottom on your own site, on your phone, honestly:
- Is the next step obvious and one-tap?
- Is it fast (PageSpeed 50+ on mobile)?
- Does it build trust in the first screen or two?
- Does the message name the visitor’s problem?
- Is there an immediate, low-friction action?
- Can AI engines see you?
Most sites with the “traffic but no leads” problem fail two or three of these, and they’re the cheapest possible thing to fix, because you’re not paying for more traffic, you’re capturing the traffic you already have. That’s usually a redesign or a targeted conversion pass, not a bigger ad budget.
If you’d rather not diagnose it yourself, that’s precisely the audit we run before any rebuild. The visibility number is the fastest starting point, and it’s free whether or not you hire us for the fix.
Why does my website get traffic but no leads?
Almost always a conversion leak rather than a traffic problem: the next step is not obvious, the site is too slow, it does not build trust fast enough, the message is about you instead of the visitor, or there is no immediate low-friction action. Most sites with this problem fail two or three of those at once.
Is it better to fix conversion or buy more traffic?
Fix conversion first. If the traffic you already have is not converting, buying more of it just scales the leak. A targeted conversion pass, a clearer next step, faster load, stronger trust, and an instant action, captures leads you are already paying for, and it is far cheaper than a bigger ad budget.
